Rockstar: 2 thumbs and 2 hallux down

So, I am writing this knowing that I will incur the wrath of the general populus when I say this: THIS MOVIE SUCKED TO THE HIGH HEAVENS..... Why was this film made in the first place? Furthermore why waste much magnificent music, singing and acting on this caricature of a story line..I know fairly well that I am in the minority when I say that for a major part of the movie, I wanted to smack the Botox out of Narghis FUCK-Ri's lips... So lets start from the beginning... the dude is a sincere guy wanting to play his guitar and sing his songs, he is even willing to sing at bus stops to entertain people... He is told that all he needs to get "there" is some type of heartbreak, pathos to launch him into the league of Jim Morrison et al...and so our hero decides to "endeavor to fall in love" with the hottest chick around... I think that's the time when a bus should have hit the girl.... what a movie it would have turned out to be!!!!! The couple decide to embark on a few stray "adventures"... nothing that ordinary college kids don't engage in.... how this mutual desire to engage in juvenile activities provided the fodder for burning love and passion is beyond me...to cut a long story short, the girl got married, went to Prague, our guy became a minor celebrity, decided to a sign a contract that basically bound him to sell his only kidney to a street hawker and visit his co conspirator in buffoonery.... They decide to re-kindle "the good old days" by following the same list of visiting shady nightclubs, frequenting red light areas and basically being jackasses...somehow during this period, they think it is time to kiss and tell (what ??, they never seem to have any kind of rational communication that two "FRIENDS" share much less two people in love)...anyway the girl is suddenly afflicted by some feeling of being unfaithful and decides to end things.. our dude does not like it much, ends up being arrested for breaking into her house, returns to India to face criminal(?) charges and face the consequences of breaching his contract....he continues to sleep walk through recordings and concerts, every now and then yelling and screaming at the media... soon after he learns that the girl is very sick and decides that she can only be cured by his delinquent shenanigans, he decides to take her to another city, get her pregnant and then leave her dying while he continues to feel, dazed, confused and sorry for himself... very similar to the reaction of the audience aka me for the purposes of this blog.....

On a more serious note, what a WASTE.. what a waste of such excellent and soul stirring music, what a waste of such deep and passionate singing and what a waste of a very talented actor..... The question that kept popping up in my mind why was this movie ever made? Moreover, why was it made with such a feeble reason to rebel??? Just because you can't be with the girl you "think" you are in love with ? They could have made a documentary with the soundtrack, or released an independent music album.....My aversion for this whole story line is two fold:
1. I hold love in very high regard, I believe true love is a function of many things, one or two of which are spending time doing silly things together, it can by no means be just those select few things... the main characters in the movie had just and only that, how was that enough to cause the dude such unbearable pain and agony, I just could not understand... poor Ranbir Kapoor was trying very hard to make it look like he cared for the girl but it just did not convince me and thus all his consequent suffering and pain also got trivialized ( at least in my eyes).. my husband begs to differ here but what does he know, he likes the Twilight movies....
2. I am extremely aware that the movie and its songs have become a rage for the youth.. I am told that Sadda Haq is almost an anthem now and without a spot of doubt it totally deserves to be so...but what haq is the dude referring to??? I am sure the song has its multiple inferences( it could be used as the background score for the ongoing anti-corruption movement...oh how I wish it had been something even in the proximity of an issue that has truly stirred the youth today) but unfortunately the sub plot for the song and the dude going anarchist on the world is because he is saddened by his pathetic love life... I hate the film makers for having diluted my image of this song by providing such a weak and cockamamie story ....Before y'all come at me with pitchforks think of Rang De Basanti and the Khalbali it caused and for good reason and now think of our hero emerging from limousines only to puke on the Oscar De la Renta clad women.....
The film makers were brave in making a movie with a very different protagonist, I just wish they had been brave enough to give him a legitimate reason to feel so sad, disillusioned and angry... unfortunately the girl who looked sooooooooooo much better when she was strapped to the hospital bed just did not provide that inspiration.....

Sadde $20 te 160 minutes waapis do !!!!

We are the champions...of the World -2nd April 2011

I just knew that I would end up blogging today. Today, on 2nd April 2011 India won the ICC World Cup 2011 against Sri Lanka at Wankhade Stadium, Mumbai. The World Cup trophy has been eluding us for the past 28 years and what a reunion it was today!!!!!!
Last time I remember our team coming this close to glory was in the 2003 final against Australia. I am saddened to say that match was nothing like this one, one sided from the word go, Australia thrashed us in the match.
As our team was doing a round in the pavilion today, I noticed the look on Dhoni's face. HE LOOKED RELIEVED NOT ECSTATIC. There is a reason why I have written that in capitals because it is the knowledge behind that look that made all the difference. You are ecstatic when you are unsure about the outcome, when the result is a surprise, when the win seems something you have clinched from fate. Dhoni's look was one of relief because he KNEW we were going to win this, it was just a matter of time and the relief flooding his face was a silent" Thank God we waited it out to get where we KNEW we would". It was that belief that brought us all the way to the final, defeating old nemesis Australia and arch rivals Pakistan.
As many of the players said in the after match conference, the team had been training and planning, keeping the World Cup in mind for nearly a year now. I truly believe that this preparation and self belief showed in the squad. This was not a team that had just come into its own during ONE match, (as had the WC team in 2003 during its match against England), it was a team poised and prepared for victory. Except for a few hiccups and mistakes, it was a team that knew exactly what it was doing and what its goal was.
When I think deeper is this team a reflection of the changing face of the Indian youth, (after all it was the young brigade that brought us home, backed by the veterans on the team)? This is no longer a team that would stand by meekly in situations such as when Aamir Sohail showed Prasad where to look for the ball, and Prasad answered by bowling him out.... it is a team which will first tell YOU and some of your female relatives where to look for the said ball and then proceed to bowl you out. Somehow this team seemed to have much more controlled aggression than all the other teams as well as its predecessors and I believe the knowledge of being able to unleash that aggression assured us the victory... after all the threat of power works much better than power itself.
All in all, I am thrilled, as an Indian, as a cricket fan and most importantly as an individual who knows the feeling of dreaming a dream and making it a reality........

Together again in .......
